Want To Host A Bards Against Hunger Event In Your Area?
Looking to host a Bards Against Hunger event? Great! The more events out there the more opportunities for poets to help the hungry and the more food we can raise for local shelters!
At first glance this might seem like a lot of work---but the beauty of the Bards Against Hunger initiative is that if you are already a poetry event organizer, it's actually very easy! So, what do you have to do to participate in Bards Against Hunger? |
Host a Poetry Event
If you are a poetry organizer, event host, or leader of a group of poets, this part should be easy because you do it already! There are no strict guidelines to the type of poetry event that can participate in Bards Against Hunger--it can be an open-mic, it can be a single poet's book launch, it can be an anthology reading, you can have featured readers, it could even be a poetry workshop!
Have Your Participants Bring Food To The Event!
This one is fairly straight forward! Whatever the event, have the participants bring some food to be donated. Non-perishable is usually best for transportation but discussing what is needed with whatever charity you choose would be best. If people can't make it to the event, no harm in them giving someone else food to bring! We've also had success with having some local businesses gather food to drop off at the event.
Donate The Food To A Shelter, Pantry or Charity Near You!
Pick a charity, shelter or pantry in your area that is responsible for feeding the hungry near you. Yes, near you---we find that the most effective way for charity to really hit home is to do just that--hit home! This way you can see the direct result of your efforts by knowing exactly where the food is going, rather than trusting some organization to bring the food to the "hungry" thousands of miles away---contact a local charity. Tell them what you are doing---most organizations will be happy to come to your event and pick up the food themselves. (In fact if you get in touch with them early enough many will send a representative to talk to your audience!)
Let Us Know How Much Food You Raised!
The food shelters are pretty good at giving you a count of how much food you donated if you ask them. So let us know how much your event raised so we can add it to our national total! If possible, send us pictures of the event to help us show the world what us poets have done to help our communities.
